Society for the Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture Amongst Youth
SPICMACAY exists to bring Indian classical arts to college campuses as something students actually show up for. As president of the BIT Mesra chapter for the 2024-2025 term, my job was to make that happen.
The flagship event is Virasat. The first edition had been clubbed with the music club's event due to limited resources and scope, and turned out to be very music-only. During my time, I wanted it to stand on its own. We expanded it: classical dance, vocals, film screenings, quizzes. 250+ participants. Knowing who to trust with what, when to step in and when to get out of the way turned out to be the whole job. The performances and were the easy part. Getting every sponsor to sign the MOU (and lock in!) before the event was the real milestone.
I'm trained in Hindustani vocals, so running SPICMACAY was either the most logical thing I've ever done or a very elaborate excuse to never have to justify my music taste again. I'm choosing not to examine that too closely.
